Recommended: "Horse Games Are Trash and I’m Over It"

About a month ago, a passionate rant posted to the /r/Games forum on Reddit brought the topic of horse games and their faults to a wide audience. The Plaid Horse, an online magazine dedicated to horses and equestrianism, approached the post’s author shortly afterwards to share a slightly edited version of the Reddit rant on their blog.

“There is no need to do anything differently” — Insights from Horse Isle 3 Lead Developer Joe ‘Jor’ Durbin

Shortly after publishing my latest article on Horse Isle 3, I was thrilled to receive a reply from Joe “Jor” Durbin, lead developer on all three Horse Isle games.

Since then, Joe and I have exchanged a few emails about the development process of Horse Isle 3. As Joe does not have the time for a full interview with TMQ, I am happy to be able to provide a bit of insight in this form nonetheless.

Horse Isle 3: First Impressions Stream Highlights

Instead of a proper review, I tried a new format for playing Horse Isle 3: On December 5th, I streamed my first two and a half hours of gameplay, aided by some members from the TMQ Community.

I wasn’t able to record the whole stream, but I’ve edited the footage I have down to a 20min highlight video.

Horse Isle 3: Player base divided over development priorities

Horse Isle 3 is an open world online multiplayer game focused on catching wild horses and breeding them for better stats. The game went live in August, after several months of open beta testing.

The decision for the game to get “released” came as a surprise to some players, considering the game’s status: The game’s 3D art and user interface look rough to put it mildly.

Bibi & Tina at the horse farm — An Exercise in Mediocrity

After the less than stellar experience with My Riding Stables, I would likely not have bothered with this game if the publisher hadn’t sent me a review code. Fortunately, Bibi & Tina auf dem Martinshof frustrated me a lot less than My Riding Stables did. Is that enough to make it a decent horse game however or is the bar just incredibly low?

“Horses are already magical, they don’t need fairy dust!” — Interview with the team of Equestrian: a Horse Game for Adults

Many horse games set the wrong priorities and get the most basic things wrong about horses. By stark contrast, watching the social media updates of Equestrian The Game has been an absolute delight. The Mane Quest reached out to developer Kavalri Games and found a kindred spirit in the team’s Vice President and Co-Founder Molly Ericson.

Horse Riding Tales — Cute Horses, Bad Interface and Excessive Microtransactions

I spontaneously tried Horse Riding Tales after someone pointed it out to me as a new Steam release. Since I get instantly excited whenever I see anything that might turn out to be a good horse game on PC, I decided to give it a go.

At the time of writing I’ve played the game for about an hour and don’t much intend to return to it.

My Riding Stables: Life With Horses/Your Horse Breeding — Horse Fans Deserve Better

I was cautiously optimistic: a remake of an okay-ish horse game, with a new stylized look? Surely, if this game went about improving the right things that bothered me about the last version, we might finally have a decent horse game on our hands.
At the risk of “spoiling” this review: this game is absolutely not decent.
