The Mane Quest is a website dedicated to horses in video games and video games about horses. As a long-time equestrian and gamer, I like to analyze horses in video games for their realism, their looks, and their mechanical features. As a video game developer and producer, I can appreciate some of the work that goes into creating life-like digital equines.

The vast majority of what we call “horse games” are cheaply made for kids. But what if instead, there were horse games made by people who really cared? A look at six work-in-progress horse games in various stages of development, made by people who really like horses and who want this niche to offer more.
So many of us feel the same way: we remember that one great horse game we played as a kid, having long forgotten about whatever wasn’t good about it. We start to wonder “hey, it’s been years since I played a good horse game, I wonder what’s new in that genre”.
As a surprise to literally no one, I have a lot of thoughts on what the creators of games with horses in them could be doing better. Every horse game player has dreams and ideas and could start listing all the features that their ideal horse game would have in an instant. Let’s ignore the dream projects today and focus on a handful of fairly basic, relatively easily fixable* mistakes that horse game developers should really stop making.
